The SRC has received several enquiries regarding Mount Pelée volcano in Martinique. Below is an extract of a statement from the agency which monitors the volcano:
The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Martinique (OVSM-IPGP) is continuously monitoring Mount Pelée Volcano in Martinique since 1902. The last magmatic eruption of Mount Pelée volcano occurred between 1929 and 1932, and there is no sign of volcanic activity since 1932. Several non-eruptive, rain-triggered lahars occurred on January 6, 7 and 8 2018 on the western flank of Mount Pelée volcano. They are the consequence of the mobilization of loose volcanic material accumulate in the river bed by a massive landslide of the Samperre cliff that occurred on January 4 2018, in the head of the northern tributary of the Prêcheur river, the Samperre river.
