Senior volcano scientists representing 22 countries from around the world will come together at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus (Trinidad) on 4-7 June 2019 to discuss the challenges and opportunities for undertaking volcanology research, monitoring and risk mitigation in a resource-constrained context.
The workshop will discuss how volcano science could be advanced as a result of fostering country partnerships through the establishment of a new community-driven network that focuses on supporting volcano scientists from Lower- to Middle- Income Countries (LMIC’s). This network would be a part of IAVCEI (International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior), the leading association representing volcanologists worldwide.
Feedback from the workshop and an accompanying survey open to the global volcanology community will channel directly into the establishment and the functioning of the network to ensure that it meets the needs of the community. “By assessing the needs and expectations of the scientists that will form the network we can ensure that it serves the prospective members,” said Dr. Victoria Miller, network working group chair and co-convener of the workshop. “Support for volcanologists to actively participate in the international community will encourage opportunities to engage and lead the science in their own countries and will therefore promote the advancement of volcano science in a sustainable and respectful manner.”
The UWI Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) is co-convening the workshop together with a working group of international volcanologists who are all members of IAVCEI. “This workshop represents the inaugural activity of the new IAVCEI network. By bringing scientists from all over the world together to discuss our common challenges and needs we can put together a road-map of activities that are beneficial to scientists working in LMIC’s and to the volcanology community as a whole” said Professor Richard Robertson, Director at UWI-SRC. “This network will also provide support for scientists here at UWI and help build our networks internationally.”
The survey that feeds into the workshop and the forthcoming recommendations for the network will be available for completion by volcanologists working in the LMIC context from 23 April until 17 May 2019 at –
