Science for the People

The UWI-SRC regularly collaborates with its regional emergency management partners to raise public awareness of the hazards monitored by the Centre through special campaigns. During the last quarter of each year Earth Science Week is celebrated in a selected territory usually under a theme supplied by the American Geosciences Institute. Earth Science Week aims to help the public better understand and gain an appreciation for the Earth Sciences. It also encourages stewardship of the Earth and its resources. In St. Vincent, Volcano Awareness Week commemorates the April 1979 eruption of La Soufrière, with a series of student workshops, stakeholder meetings and a guided hike up the volcano led by UWI-SRC scientists. Campaigns tailored to specific needs can be requested by interested territories through their national disaster offices.  As required, the UWI-SRC also hosts professional development seminars on the hazards it monitors for persons involved in emergency management at local and regional levels.
