CORE Internship

The Next Generation

The C.O.R.E. (Creating Opportunities through Research and Experience) internship program provides Caribbean students with legitimate work experience within the earth sciences. Final year undergraduate students in the physical and earth sciences as well as the communication disciplines apply to complete a research project under the guidance of a senior UWI-SRC scientist during the July/August break. The Centre considers this a nursery of sorts for the next generation of Caribbean geoscientists.

Real science, valuable experience…

Over the course of eight weeks interns shadow researchers and technicians as they learn different elements of earthquake and volcano monitoring. At the end of the internship participants deliver a presentation on their work to staff and receive certificates of participation. In existence since 2009, the program usually offers at least two positions per rotation. Past C.O.R.E. “graduates” have entered the Centre’s post-graduate programme and completed higher degrees.
